Now that we are back to school and back to life, or this new version of life we are living, you’ll most likely get settled back into some sort of routine…whatever that looks like for your family. Just because Summer is almost over doesn’t mean that your adventures have to be! Hiking offers more than just a change of scenery. It is also a great low-impact workout offering multiple mental and physical benefits, such as reducing hypertension and anxiety. Get outdoors, get active and smell that crisp, clean air with the list of our Top 5 Fall hiking trails in the Northeast.

1. Mount Tammany Trails: Mount Tammany’s Red Dot and Blue Dot Loop Trail is a 6.3-mile loop trail located near Pahaquarry, New Jersey that features a river and is rated as difficult. In the Fall, the views of the Delaware Water Gap from the top of Mount Tammany are breathtaking! The trail is accessible year-round, and dogs are also able to use this trail.

2. Bear Mountain Trail: Located near Salisbury, Connecticut, this 6.5-mile trail features beautiful wildflowers and is rated as moderate. As the highest peak in Connecticut, the top of Bear Mountain provides a fantastic view of the surrounding Catskills in New York and Mount Everett in Massachusetts. The trail allows dogs and is best used from March until November.

3. Breakneck Ridge: Breakneck Ridge is one of the most popular hiking spots in NY! Consisting of multiple trails, varying in length and difficulty, Breakneck Ridge is located near Cold Spring, New York. It features a waterfall and while the trails are primarily used for hiking, they can also be used for rock climbing. Dogs are also able to use the trails, but must be kept on a leash and the best time to use the trails is from April until November.

4. Pulpit Rock: Located near Hamburg, PA, this 3.8-mile loop trail features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. This trail is part of the 230 miles of the Appalachian Trail that runs through Pennsylvania. Anyone who’s hiked up Pulpit Rock will tell you it has one of the best views on the trail, and definitely the best view in PA.The trail is accessible year-round, and dogs are allowed on this trail.

5. Mullica River Trail: The Mullica River Trail is an 18.2-mile loop trail located near Hammonton, New Jersey in the Wharton State Forest that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. If you’ve ever been to Wharton State Forest, you know it’s the perfect place for a day hike or a weekend camping excursion! The trail is best from April until October, and dogs are able to use this trail, but must be kept on leash.
