Fall Northeast Surf Fishing

Fall isn't just the season for leaf peeping and everything Pumpkin Spice, but it's also a great time for surf fishing. Now is the time to get out and walk the beaches in search of Striped Bass, Bluefish, and False Albacore.
We spoke to Don Bisch, a lifelong surf fisherman, and employee at Ramsey Outdoor Store in Succasunna to cover his favorite type of fall surf fishing which is walking the beach and casting lures. "You'll want to cover as much water as you can. Keep an eye out for birds diving for bait within casting range and cast along the way until you find some action. Keep it light and simple as too much gear becomes a burden while surf fishing".

- 9-10ft Surf Rod

preferably sealed (waterproof or water resistant)

- Lures
- Diamond Jigs - 2-4oz in green. This is a great sand eel imitation and works for all types of fish.
- Pencil Popper - 5-7in - This is a great imitation of a bunker and can be used if you see fish feeding on the surface
- Epoxy Jigs - Another great sand eel imitation and the False Albacore can't resist them
- Bucktail Jigs - 2-4oz in white - This classic lure can be used to imitate a wide variety of bait fish in our waters. Throw a soft tail or grub on the bucktail hook to give it some action in the water.
- Small Clippers (for clipping fishing line)
- Pliers - to help remove the hooks, especially those Blue Fish!
- Tackle Bag - Go with a small soft-sided bag
- Polarized Sunglasses - (to see fish underwater and protect eyes from the sun and flying hooks)
