How to Get Started Series: Freshwater Fishing

Freshwater Fishing is both relaxing and challenging for all ages and skill levels, and sometimes you are rewarded in the biggest ways. Have you thought about going fishing before, but were overwhelmed by all the gear you thought you might need? Don’t feel intimidated, we’ve put together a basic guide to help get you started!

Gear Essentials

No matter your skill level, the right gear is essential to catching that trophy fish.

1. A Fishing License: Every state has different rules and regulations. Before going fishing, check your state’s guidelines and make sure you purchase a license.

2. Rod & Reel: To get started, you will need a rod and a reel. There are many different choices and sizes out there that range in price significantly. A rod and reel combo is a good choice for beginners. You’ll want to choose a rod that feels good and fits comfortably in your hands.

3. Fishing Line: When it comes to fishing line, there are a lot of choices. For freshwater fishing, you can’t go wrong with monofilament line. If you are fishing for smaller fish, go for a line with at least 10-pound test. However, if you are fishing for larger fish, you will want a line with a higher test weight.

4. Hooks: Combo kits are great for beginners since they come with a variety of different hooks and sizes. For small fish, you can go with hook sizes 6 and 10.

5. Split Shot: These are small metal weights which easily clip to your fishing line.

6. Bobbers: Bobbers are floats that let you know when the fish are beginning to bite. If it goes under and stays under, you’ve got a fish on your hook.

7. Bait: There are a lot of tackle shops and sporting good stores that offer live bait. You can also choose to use lures. It’s really up to your preference and what type of fish you are fishing for.

8. Scissors: You’ll need scissors for when you have to cut your line.

9. Pliers: Always make sure you have a pair of pliers with you. You will need them to pull the hook from your catch.

10. Tackle Box: Every fisherman knows, you can never have too many tackle boxes! This piece will be critical to your gear as it will carry your line, lures, hooks, etc. You can always wear a vest as well, so you can keep your favorite lures, scissors, and pliers close at hand.

11. Cooler: You’ll want a cooler to hold water, a lunch or snack if you plan on being out for a while, and if it’s big enough, it can even double as a seat.

12. Bucket: If you plan on keeping your catch, it’s good to have a bucket to keep them in until you can get them cleaned and fileted.

13. Clothing: As far as clothing goes, you can wear whatever you are comfortable in. Keep in mind, you will be in the Sun for a prolonged time, so you will want clothing that keeps you protected, especially a hat.
