Outdoor Activities to Quell Cabin Fever in the Northeast

Jan 18th 2021

It’s the middle of Winter, it’s cold, and you’re dreaming of the Spring months when it’s warm and you can enjoy the best Nature has to offer. Then, you hear, “I’m bored,” from one of the kids. Panic sets in as you realize everyone needs to get outdoors! No need to fear, layer up the family and have some fun enjoying some of the fun Winter offers. Here’s a list of our favorite Winter Outdoor activities to help battle Cabin Fever.

  • Snow Tubing: Kids of all ages love to go to Snow Tubing. What isn’t there to like about flying down a mountain of snow on an innertube? NJ and the surrounding area is home to some of the best snow tubing parks in the USA!
  • Skiing or Snowboarding: Just like snowtubing, skiing and snowboarding send you flying over the snow and down a mountain. They are both exhilarating and fun for all ages, plus the Northeast has some of the best resorts like Campgaw Mountain in Mahwah, NJ. Before heading to the mountain, check the website first for any safety precautions.
  • Cross Country Skiing: In the shadow of the High Point Monument (1,803 feet high) at the northern tip of New Jersey, is the High Point Cross Country Ski Center. More than 1600 feet in elevation guarantees that High Point is the snowiest spot in the metropolitan area. It's "New England," nearby! Discover an alpine hollow of lakes, trees, wildlife, and sweeping vistas. Even though they are currently closed due to lack of snow, we’re keeping our fingers crossed the snow will be back soon. Check their website for the trail report.
  • Ice Fishing: Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, ice fishing provides sport and fun for all who dare to venture onto the ice!
  • Snowshoeing: Strap on a pair of snowshoes and explore the unspoiled terrain while getting a great workout! There are a ton of great trails for snowshoeing in NJ. A few favorites are the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area or Jenny Jump. If you’re looking for more even terrain to start, pick a Rail Trail like Paulinskill Valley or Sussex Branch.

With so much fun packed into this list, you may have to try everything at least once.
