The Northeast has a hidden secret, we are home to some of the best fly fishing spots in the US! We’ve included our Top 5 Spots for Fly Fishing in the Northeast. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, fly fishingprovides sport and fun for all who dare to wade into the water!

  1. Farmington River, CT: This is the premier trout fishery in the state. The bottom draw tailwater fishery creates consistent water temperatures, flows, and hatch activity. The area from Farmington to Riverton is the most reliable stretch with rainbows, browns, and brook trout. This river is a rival to any out West!
  2. Ken Lockwood Gorge, NJ: A picturesque, yet accessible spot that’s great to take the family! Flanking two and a half miles of the Raritan River’s South Branch, the Claremont stretch is known for its brook and brown trout. State regulations allow the Gorge to be fished nearly year-round, making this secluded river a hotspot on the weekends. If you’re looking for less of a crowd, pick a weekday for your trip.
  3. Savage River, MD: Located entirely within the Savage River State Forest, the Savage River is 30 miles long. With almost three quarters of this river being freestone, and the last 5 miles below the Savage River Dam being dubbed as a “Trophy Trout” area, this river is the best of both worlds! Filled with a plethora of wild brook, brown, and the occasional rainbow trout it attracts anglers from all over the East coast.
  4. Esopus Creek, NY: This 65-mile long tributary of the Hudson River is located in the Northeastern Catskills. Thanks to extremely cold-water flows that can be found here year-round, the wild rainbow trout outnumber the brown trout. Don’t miss the Isonychia hatch that begins in June, it’s one of the creek’s finest!
  5. Penn’s Creek, PA: This tributary of the Susquehanna River, is named after the founder of the state, William Penn. With 35 miles of trout water, this is Pennsylvania’s longest limestone trout stream. World famous for it’s Green Drake hatch that occurs from late May to early June, producing average size fish in the 16-inch range. Penn’s Creek is a magical creek that needs to be on every angler’s bucket list!
