Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) Yoga is increasing in popularity. Not only because it combines two different activities that a lot of people like, Sup and Yoga, but because it offers a challenging workout outdoors that requires focus and it is also a lot of fun. However, you don’t have to be experienced in either activity to get started! Worried about all the gear you think you may need? Worry no more because we’ve put together a basic guide to help get you started.
Gear Essentials
Whether you’re an experienced yogi or a newbie, the right gear is essential, and it only takes a few key pieces. The list below outlines what is needed to have you on the water in no time.
- SUP: This is your most important piece of equipment! Your first few times out, you may want to rent gear until you decide if you are really into SUP Yoga. Once you’ve decided that you want your own board, there are many choices. Different types of boards are designed for different types of styles, such as surfing, recreational paddling, racing, and yoga. Your board choice should be selected based upon a combination of paddler weight, skill, intended use, and local conditions.
- Gear: You’ll also need a paddle, leash, and anchors for doing your yoga practice. SUP paddles are similar looking to a canoe paddle, but longer and with an angled blade for efficiency. The proper size will reach up to your wrist when standing it in front of you with your arm stretched above your head. Anchors are placed at the nose and tail, so the board doesn’t swing in the wind. It is common to keep a PFD and a water bottle under the bungee.
- Instructor/Class: Now that you have your gear, it’s time to decide on an instructor in your area and you want to make sure they are certified. Usually, you can find both group and private classes, so pick the one you are most comfortable with. Join us at Horseshoe Lake on select dates with certified instructor Erica Pizza now through September 1st for classes. Sign up is required in advance and you must be at least 16 years old to participate in classes.
Now that you know the basics, stop by one of our locations and our knowledgeable staff will help you get the SUP gear you need to get started. Once you’ve acquired your gear, join us for Paddle Days to get out on the water and get familiar with your board.
