Spring Bass fishing by our Hobie fishing team member Rich Toepfer.
Greetings, this is my second year writing a Spring fishing blog for Ramsey Outdoor! Spring has arrived and what seemed like the winter that would never end, has finally ended. I personally have been on the water a few times already this spring and have had success so far. I began with the basics and that’s how I’ve found the fish!
I grabbed four rods out of my garage along with some jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and the ever trustworthy chatterbaits. I hopped on to my new addition, the Hobie Lynx, and went out for the day. I focused on the side that the sun hits first in the morning and also focused on structure that retains heat. Examples of structures that retain heat during these warm spring days are bridges, concrete pilings, rock formations, concrete walls, and anywhere else that you can find a hard surface that will warm up through the day.
Let’s break down the baits I suggested for this time of year. Jerkbaits work great with a slow retrieval and an occasional twitch along the way back. You don’t want to retrieve the same way every time. I was on the water last year on Lake Musconetcong and had one of the best fishing days ever by reeling a jerkbait as fast as I could. The fish were hitting it like a truck every cast! Slow rolling a spinnerbait is one of my favorite techniques during spring fishing. Crankbaits work well, especially when you bang them into structure on the bottom to create attention and noise. The reliable chatterbait also works miracles. Whether it is reeled in slow or reeled in as fast you can. Don’t be scared to throw an appealing trailer on the chatterbait.
Keep things simple and don’t be afraid to fish outside of your comfort zone!
I plan on writing some more blogs about my adventures this year and my fishing experiences! Follow along this year as I track down big bass and hungry pike. You can also follow me on social media via Instagram @Rich_T_Fishing.
