September is National Preparedness Month or as one of our amazing brands, Goal Zero likes to call it, PrepTember. Do you and your family know what to do and how to prepare for a Hurricane or Natural Disaster? Goal Zero created the PrepTember Initiative to get people to pay attention and learn how to do just that, be prepared. Goal Zero has responded to almost every recent natural disaster from Hurricane Sandy, typhoons in the Philippines, the earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal, and most recently Hurricane Maria.
With the horrible devastation caused by Maria almost a year ago still a concern for some, we wanted to discuss about how to be prepared if faced with a natural disaster. Most people don't realize how much you truly need to do to be prepared!

Further, if you were to receive a hurricane, flood, wildfire, or other evacuation warning, watch or alert, ready.gov gives some basic preparedness tips that we thought were important to note:
- Make an Emergency Plan of where you can and will go if you are ordered to evacuate. Consider any special needs your household may have such as medical or pets and learn the local evacuation routes.
- Sign up for alerts and warnings specific to your area.
- Have an emergency bag packed and ready to go! Be sure to include a flashlight/headlamp, batteries, cash, first aid kit, your everyday medications, and copies of your critical information.
- Have a Stay in Place Plan! Know your evacuation zone, and if you are not in an area ordered to evacuate, make sure that you have enough supplies for everyone in your home for an extended period of time.
- Make and practice your Emergency Communication Plan so that family members and friends have a way of knowing you are safe and know the plan ahead of time.
Also, we encourage you to donate anything you can to organizations such as the Red Cross or Salvation Army in order to help the people who have lost everything. Natural disasters are not something to take lightly. We encourage you to prepare for the worst and hope for the best…and always heed the warnings of your state and local government as far as what is safest for you, your family, and your neighbors.
