We would like to welcome Rich Toepfer to the Ramsey Outdoor Hobie Fishing Team. Rich will be working closely with us this season and is a true expert in the field of kayak fishing. Rich started fishing at a very young age and his favorite fish to target is Smallmouth Bass, but he also loves hitting the saltwater for Striped Bass from time to time. We are excited to follow Rich throughout a series of tournaments around the country this season with his new Hobie Outback kayak. Keep reading on for Rich's blog on getting ready for spring freshwater bass fishing.
Be Ready, It’s Almost Spring!
Spring is around the corner and that means the ice will start disappearing. At this point, you should be rechecking your rods, reels, and tackle so that everything is prepped! Sharpen those hooks on your favorite lures and make sure they're ready to hook up. When that first warm day comes and you're ready to hit the water, start by focusing on the basics. If your local lake is free of ice, fish the side that the sun hits the most. This will be where you’ll get your warmest water.
The lures to throw in the beginning of the season are basic. Cold water means a cold approach. Try throwing a jerkbait, nothing crazy in size. When retrieving the jerkbait, make sure you are not using the same motion every time. Every now and then, give it an extra pop or longer hesitation in the strike zone. Crankbaits are great as well. Run them into rocks and logs to attract more attention. The fish are going to be attracted to the noise. You can also run spinner baits up the bank if the jerkbaits and square bills aren't producing, or try finesse worms and bladed jigs.
The best tool that you can have to find and land fish will be your mindset. Confidence and a positive mentality are key to having success on the water. Fish basic and fish smart. My longtime mentor and Friend, Bob, once told me, “Elephants eat peanuts, Rich”. This is one piece of advice that I live by when I’m out on the water. Think about it and let it settle in!
