How to Get Started Series: Climbing

Have you always wanted to go climbing, but thought it was just out of reach? Today’s your lucky day then, because we’ve put together a basic guide to help get you started!

Indoor Climbing

There’s a pretty good chance that you’ve heard of or even driven passed and indoor climbing gym. These gyms attempt to replicate the same experiences as outdoor climbing with artificial walls, hand and footholds with different levels of difficulty. Indoor climbing is a great way to start your climbing experience and build your skill before taking it outdoors.

Outdoor Climbing

Once you’ve graduated from the gym and are ready for real rock, sport climbing is the way to go. A classification of rock climbing, sport climbing uses a route with pre-established anchors every few meters as opposed to “trad” or traditional climbing, where you place and remove protection/anchors as you go. If you’re feeling adventurous enough to try trad climbing, always go with an experienced climber until you hone your skills.

Kit Essentials

No matter what level, beginner or advanced, your kit is essential to every climb! The list below outlines the essential tools needed to climb outdoors.

  1. Helmet: Your mind is your best feature, protect it! Whether you are climbing indoors or out, always make sure you have a helmet.
  2. Climbing Rope: When starting out in sport climbing, go with a rope that is 10mm of thickness in diameter or more. Ropes that are skinnier are less durable and more slippery for novice climbers.
  3. Climbing Harness: Unless you are Spiderman, you’re going to need a harness. Make sure that it fits comfortably and has loops for quickdraws.
  4. Climbing Shoes: A must-have for any climber! They come in many different styles to match your taste, plus you can even get sport-specific shoes for a better climbing experience.
  5. Belay Device: A belay device is an assisted braking device, which when used correctly, helps catch a fall. Don’t forget, always make sure your brake hand is on the rope.
  6. Chalk Bag and Chalk: A good grip is key in climbing! Always keep chalk with you on a climb to keep hands dry and to prevent slipping. Most chalk bags come with a one-handed opening feature just in case you forget to chalk up before your climb.

Now that you have the basics, find an indoor climbing gym or experienced guide and get out there and climb to the stars! Gear up for adventure with Ramsey Outdoor!
