September is National Hurricane Preparedness month or as our awesome brand Goal Zero would call PrepTember. Would you know what to do and how to properly prepare for a Hurricane? Goal Zerocreated the PrepTember initiative as a way to get people to pay attention and learn how to prepare. Goal Zero has responded to almost every recent natural disaster from Hurricane Sandy, typhoons in the Philippines, to the earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal. Today they are packing and organizing relief efforts to respond to the devastation left behind from Hurricane Harvey.
With the horrible devastation tropical storm Harvey has already caused, we started to think about how prepared we were if we were faced with a natural disaster in our area. Most people don't realize how much you need to do to truly be prepared.
Check out our Goal Zero brand page HERE to see the types of products that we carry that will help you in the event of a natural disaster.
Further, if you were to receive a hurricane warning, watch or alert, ready.gov gives some basic preparedness tips that we thought were important to note:
- Make a plan of where you can and will go if you are ordered to evacuate. Learn the local hurricane evacuation routes.
- Have a hurricane bag packed. Be sure to include a flashlight/headlamp, batteries, cash, first aid kit, your everyday medications, and copies of your critical information.
- Make a stay in place plan. If you are not in an area ordered to evacuate, make sure you have enough supplies to be in your home for an extended period of time.
- Make an emergency communication plan so that family members and friends have a way of knowing you are safe.
Also, we encourage you to donate anything you can to organizations such as the Red Cross or Salvation Army in order to help the people who have lost everything. Natural disasters are not something to take lightly. We encourage you to prepare for the worst and hope for the best…and always heed the warnings of your state and local government as far as what is safest for you, your family, and your neighbors.
