Fall Foliage Season is upon us and with the promise of candy-like colors and cooler air, it’s also a great time to go for a scenic drive and to take a hike! Here’s a list of the 5 Best Places to view Fall Foliage in the Northeast, not in any specific order.
- Maine’s Acadia National Park: With 47,000 acres on Mount Desert Island, Acadia National Park is a Nature lover’s paradise! The 27-mile Park Loop Road offers many opportunities for photographs, and Cadillac Mountain is the highest peak on the North Atlantic seaboard providing amazing views of the surrounding area and fall colors.
- Vermont’s Route 100: This route in Vermont runs along the eastern edge of the Green Mountains and connects towns like Waterbury, Stowe, and Mad River Valley making it an excellent choice for a weekend road trip. Route 100 is billboard free, plus there are plenty of country shops and places to stop for cider! Don’t forget to stop for a hike at Mount Killington for peak views.
- Connecticut’s Route 7: Located in Northwestern Connecticut, this route is filled with rolling hills, gorgeous river views, and village greens. Start the trip near Norwalk, then stop for a hike in Kent Falls State Park, which includes covered bridges and waterfalls for a picturesque scene. Continue to Woodbury, known as the “antique capital of Connecticut”, and end in Litchfield Hills for a classic New England town explorable by foot, horseback, or hot air balloon!
- Massachusetts Route 6A: Running through several picture-perfect Cape Cod villages, Route 6A is even more magical with a splash of Fall colors. Beginning just after the Sagamore Bridge, follow the route to the Cape’s oldest town, Sandwich. Head to Yarmouth Port from there, then on to Dennis, and finally to Brewster. Brewster is filled with 19th-century sea captain homes and Nickerson State Park. The 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail is the perfect hike for leaf peeping and peak season hits late here, so it’s a great trip if you’re still looking for leaves come mid-October.
- New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway: Known as “the Kanc” by locals, this scenic 35-mile drive starts in Lincoln and goes through the White Mountain National Forest. While you’re there stop at the C.L. Graham Overlook below the summit of Kancamagus Pass, have a picnic in Conway at Sabbaday Falls, it’s a half-mile hike from the trailhead and it ends in a waterfall, then head North to Bretton Woods for amazing views on the peak of Mount Washington.
