Hey Fly Fishing Community;
I want to tell you guys about another super exciting destination that I had the opportunity to fish last year. Over the course of my life, I’ve been to almost 50 locations globally and have seen fisheries rise and fall. If you are a new or an experienced flyrodder and catching big fish on a fly rod is appealing, - than this is for you!
In July 2027, I will be returning to "The Fish Ranch" in the Sea of Cortez on The Baja Peninsula in Mexico for the second time to host a 6 night/5 day guided trip (click for trip details) to chase the amazing Roosterfish. The fishery there is incredibly ALIVE and it reminds me of the vast amount of life I've seen visiting Alaska waters.
After landing from a short direct flight from Newark, NJ to Cabo, I took a two hour drive that was absolutely stunning through the scenic desert to the coastal town of La Ventana where I met my charming host Mary Childs Grigsby. She gave me a tour of the amazing private estate we got to enjoy over 6 days. The ocean views are epic from the balcony over looking the personal swimming pool that was highlighted by the epic scenery of Isla Ceralvo. I was also greeted by the unbelievable "Chef Emilio" who had already catered to my dietary restrictions and created culinary delights only a master of his field could manage. Food was plentiful and exciting along with delicious cocktails. After a quick meal ..it was prep time.
I prepared 10, 11 and 12 wt. rods as I did not know what to expect. At 6am we piled back into our little transport for a quick ride to Los Muertos where I met many of the famous members of the Lucero family who were our captains/guides for the remainder of my stay. Their name is synonymous with roosterfish angling and they are revered as "The Best" in the area. I was thinking the whole time I would be lucky to have one or two good Roosters over the course of my 5 days stay. Boy was I wrong. Day one was an absolute blast and had 8 Roosters between 10 and 20lbs. My body had the black and blues to prove it. I was in a fight all day! Angling Heaven! Flies were easy to cast...wind was minimal and The Sea of Cortez is more like a lake than part of the ocean. By day four, I had landed a total of 34 fish between Jacks and Roosters and if I had just concentrated on Jacks my count for the week would have been astronomical . Simply put, this location is FLY ROD HEAVEN. I need to mention, I still had a day to fish and Marlin had always been a bucket list fish on the fly for me so we spent the final day chasing them.. No luck, but that mission is no easy task and one that will keep me coming back. This location offers multi-speciies opportunities- such Dorado, Wahoo, Milk fish, Tuna, Pompano, Billfish and always a couple surprise specifies.

Late afternoons are spent with my non-angling wife swimming, birdwatching, exploring La Ventana and resting. We even took a tour of a working ranch in the area with an expert biologist who helped us identify endemic species of both flora and fauna. She went snorkeling and intercepted a pod of orcas who had a super young whale in the pod...needless to say...the stoke was high.
I'll be returning in July 2027 with up to 10 anglers. The place has extremely limited availability throughout the year. Don’t wait to book this exclusive adventure. Adventure is high on the list and I’m looking forward to serious action and the tranquil evenings of La Ventana.

Hope to see you there in 2027 with Ramsey Outdoor Stores.
