Fast fashion has become one of the largest sources of pollution in the world, and one answer to help combat it is Sustainable fashion. No need to get overwhelmed, joining the Sustainable Clothing Movement is easier than you think! You ask yourself questions before buying food or a car about the impact on the environment, just transfer those same questions to your clothing before you make a purchase. From the shoes you wear to the shirt on your back, chances are you’ll be able to find a fashionable and sustainable option.
So just how did the movement start? It’s probably not how you think! Sustainable or Eco Fashion came into existence in the 1940’s when a rationing policy was put into place during World War II. 1940’s fashion was designed to limit the amount of fabric needed to make clothes, reducing the waste of leftover fabric paving the way for cinched waists and shorter skirts.
Coming back into the spotlight in the late 1980’s, sustainable fashion was bought into the well-known companies Patagonia and ESPIRIT. The foundations of sustainable fashion that were put forward by these two companies were based on the philosophy of ecologists, guiding a whole movement in fashion and sustainability. Patagonia made a commitment to recycled polyester in 1992 and then made a company commitment to organic cotton in 1996.
Today, while some companies are focusing on making manufacturing processes eco-friendlier, others are completely changing the materials they use. Some companies have gone as far to include eco-friendly facilities with solar power, living walls, and more! When larger, well-known companies embrace sustainability, it gives us hope that they will encourage other companies and consumers to participate and reduce their impact on the environment.
